Benji plays a very interesting role in the the Compson family. He is able to sense that certain events or events that are going to happen later in the family's life. Benji gives us the unique perspective that the Compson family is on their downfall. Benji's strong need for consistency is because he is unable to take care of himself. Benji's also strong nostalgia for his younger days shows that the family has fallen apart and has worsen since Benji's younger days. This also shows that the South shows that they are not as accepting of Benji and his disability. Benji develops a symbolic nature in the book. He symbolizes all of the hardships in which the Compson family endures.
